Ulan Moore is an award-winning classically trained artist. He has spent many years studying the traditional drawing, painting, and sculpting techniques of the old masters, as well as the 19th century French academic and contemporary methods of today.
As a child, Ulan loved drawing and spent much of his free time copying and trying to learn to draw like the artists he admired. His mother would enroll him in various summer art programs that gave him his first real instruction. In high school, he was allowed to work on special advanced projects and studies.
Ulan then went to Seattle and trained as a graphic designer. Returning home to the Willamette Valley he began his work as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. His first job was working for Western Family Foods making inked illustrations of products for coupons and newspaper ads. Over the years Ulan has applied his skills in a variety of ways. He worked painting murals for people in their homes and businesses, as well as painting graphics and murals on high-end custom cars, motorcycles and boats. He also worked as a sign painter, book illustrator and much more.
In 2007, at the age of 37, Ulan was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Losing the ability to control his right hand, he began to try painting with his left hand, venturing outside everyday, working from nature. After a year's effort, he applied to Juliette Aristides Classical Atelier and was accepted. Ulan spent four years there working seven days a week to learn and master the techniques and methods of classical drawing and painting. Two of those years he spent as Juliette's class monitor overseeing the daily operations of the atelier. While there, Ulan won many awards for his work. He also had the opportunity to train with many of today's top level artists and instructors from around the world.
Ulan is also an instructor providing workshops, classes and private instruction on a variety of subjects. He has worked with students throughout the Northwest. Additionally, he gives individual and small group instruction at his studio in Silverton, Oregon, where he currently resides.
"I use traditional techniques and methods that have been proven and tested over centuries, while also adapting and incorporating modern materials and methods. I work to create technically sound and beautiful works of the people, landscape and things around me. I want to paint our time and place with the skills, knowledge and artistry that the great artists of the past painted theirs."
